Numerous countries have enacted policies or developed guidelines regarding improving energy efficiency in the industrial sector. In some countries, like the United States, these policies are not limited to implementation at a federal level - they span the entire governmental bridge from local or municipal all the way up to state and federal. On some levels, mandatory minimum guidelines have been established that industries must conform to with regard to their daily operations. These guidelines may cover the types of equipment used based on its energy consumption, or they may apply to waste output and how the company handles reduction of pollutants, contaminants, and toxins that comprise their unusable industrial by-products.
