Havelock Wool

Havelock Wool is changing the green building environment with their Insulation Toddlers can Snuggle. Havelock Wool is environmentally friendly and made completely out of New Zealand sheep wool. Made of 100% wool and pinch of boric acid this insulation keeps your home envelope tight and insects out.

Traditional insulation is made up fiberglass. This can irritate the skin, lungs and eyes during insulation and sometimes once in the home. Leaky ducts in the insulation can cause the fiberglass to spread around the ducts.

If fiberglass becomes wet, it eventually will lose its effectiveness. Despite the possible health effects once fiberglass insulation stops working it makes your home an energy vacuum. This has led to a search for an alternative effective material.

Havelock Wool has created a safe alternative to fiberglass insulation while at the same time being a renewable resource. The company prides themselves in “harnessing the power of nature to improve the performance of everyday living/ work environments,” said the company spokesperson.

Wool is an effective alternative to fiberglass due to its ability to manage moisture against humidity. As well as capturing humidity, it traps harmful chemicals such as nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and formaldehyde. In result creating cleaner air.

Wool Production

Havelock Wool recently released their Smart Wall or “smart enclosure system” along with 475 High Performance. Their hope is to provide efficiency in building and everyday life. Most walls in this market are built with toxic materials and end up becoming vapor retarding and even vapor-closed. Such walls can trap moisture and become difficult to dry out. If a building wall or a house can’t dry out, it can lead to different kinds of damage.

While alternative sources to fiberglass still make up only a small amount of the market hopefully companies such as will make environmentally friendly alternatives the new norm.
