Receives National Association of Development Organizations 2010 Innovation Award
The Atlanta Regional Commission received a 2010 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Research Foundation for its Green Communities Certification Program.
Green Communities is the only regional certification program that recognizes local governments for policies and practices that reduce their environmental footprint. Cities and counties earn Green Communities certification by implementing sustainability measures in 10 categories, including green building, energy efficiency, green energy, water efficiency, protection of trees and greenspace, transportation and recycling. Since the program was first launched in 2008, nine local governments – six cities and three counties – have been certified. Certified Green Communities in metro Atlanta are leading the way to a more sustainable region by serving as examples for other local governments and area businesses and organizations seeking to reduce their environmental impact.
