More Than 1,000 Trees and Plants Offered at Annual Non-Profit Fundraiser

Trees Atlanta announced details for the 11th Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale.  The nationally known non-profit is hosting the event at their LEED Platinum certified headquarters, the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center, located at 225 Chester Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30316.  The Trees Atlanta Tree Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Trees Atlanta donors of $500 or more are invited to attend a preview shopping night the evening before the Tree Sale.

Each October, Trees Atlanta offers more than 1,000 plants including 200 species of trees, shrubs and tree-friendly vines for purchase by the public. This year’s sale, sponsored by Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., focuses on shade trees and native trees that are disappearing from Atlanta’s urban landscape.  These trees are not typically available in nurseries and are seldom planted by local landscapers.

Georgia Power to Increase Solar Initiatives PDF Print E-mail

The Georgia Solar Energy Association (GSEA) presented the Southern Solar Summit today in Atlanta.  The Keynote speaker, Lauren "Bubba" McDonald, Chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commisson, announced Thursday, 8/19, that Georgia Power will increase their 2.5 MW cap by an additional 2.5 MW for solar power generation applied to their Premium Green Energy Program. 

Additionally, Georgia Power announced their new solar tariff program in which they will buy back electricity generated from solar at .17 cents per kW for an additional 1.5 MW, this applies to the current backlog of solar installations applications and all applications going forward.

GreenPlate Launches 7-Day Plastic Challenge PDF Print E-mail

On August 23rd, GreenPlate is launching the 7-Day Plastic Challenge to help raise awareness about the environmental and health issues related to single-use plastic.

There is an area in the Pacific Ocean, twice the size of Texas, known as the North Pacific Gyre.  In 2001, the plastic to plankton ratio in the North Pacific Ocean was 6:1. In 2008, the ratio grew exponentially to 28:1. Plastic is made to last forever.  Using plastic for a one time, single use is not a good use of a good, long-lasting product. Single use plastics are becoming an epidemic for our environment - and fast.
