The Argenta District Master Plan, created by Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates (TSW, www.tunspan.com), an Atlanta-based full-service planning, architecture and landscape architecture firm, has received the “2010 Achievement in Comprehensive Plan Award”. The award was presented by the Arkansas Chapter of the American Planning Association at its recent fall conference in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Argenta is the historic name for downtown North Little Rock, Arkansas. The 450-acre area is located just across the Arkansas River from downtown Little Rock. Within its borders are two sports arenas, a riverfront park, a Main Street and a variety of residential architecture styles. TSW has created a comprehensive plan based on the principles of New Urbanism, calling for 1,400 new apartments, condos and single family-detached homes, improved sidewalks, a multi-use trail to promote walking and bicycling, newshops and restaurants within walking distance of residences, a new school, new parks and green spaces, new fire and police stations, a public health facility, a farmer’s market and a multi-modal transportation hub.
“We solicited input from a number of groups and individuals,” said Tom Walsh, founding principal of TSW. “In particular, we worked in partnership with North Little Rock, the Argenta Community Development Corp. and the development firm, The Mill LLC. The urban design recommendations we have made focus on preserving Argenta’s historic fabric and complementing it with appropriately scaled new development. In addition, the plan includes form-based zoning codes to regulate redevelopment and advance the community’s vision for its future.”
Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates has master-planned numerous sustainable towns and neighborhoods throughout its 20-year history. Among the firm’s considerations for new communities or historic revitalizations are architectural character and scale, historic
sensitivity, connectivity, environmental opportunities and constraints and zoning and land use. Locally, TSW has been involved in Master Plans for Downtown Woodstock, Vickery Village, City of Decatur, Glenwood Park, Edgewood Retail District and many other communities and historic small towns in and around Atlanta.
